3rd Grade High Frequency Words
Children should be taught high frequency words. Words such as: a, the, it, is, to, and, said, are, do not follow the common phonics instruction and rules. These words cannot be sounded out or decoded. Many sight words do not always sound as their spelling might propose such as was /wuz/ and of /ov/. These words require memorization and automatic recognition when reading. This third grade sight word list is intended to challenge students in the 3rd – through 5th grades with necessary sight word development. It is also beneficial for the younger ready ready for advanced learning opportunities. Repeated exposure to high frequency words greatly improves automatic word recognition as well as accuracy in reading. This in turn further develops reading fluency skills in the older reader.
